Texas Children's Houston Open 2024 History

Until the 1970s, the competition was held at several locations in Houston. It began 78 years ago at River Oaks Country Club in 1946, moved to Memorial Park Golf Course in 1947, and took a year off before returning to Pine Forest Country Club in 1949 and Braeburn Country Club in 1950. Following this time of travelling, the tournament made Memorial Park its home from 1951 to 1963. It first took place at Sharpstown Country Club in 1964 and 1965.

Six years later, it relocated to Champions Golf Club in 1966, and then in 1972, it moved to Westwood Country Club. In 1973 and 1974, the event moved beyond the municipal boundaries to the southwest suburb of Missouri at Quail Valley Country Club. In 1975, it moved to The Woodlands, where it remained at the Woodlands Country Club until 1984 and the TPC at The Woodlands until 2002.

It was first played at the Members Course, moving to the Tournament Course in 2006. It moved close to Humble in 2003 and stayed there for 17 years. Until December 2013, the facility was called Redstone Golf Club, currently known as the Golf Club of Houston.

The Houston Open, once scheduled weeks later in the middle of spring, was the final opportunity to secure a spot in the Augusta field by a win. From 2007 to 2018 (except for 2013, when it was hosted two weeks before the Masters), it was played the week before the tournament. Up to four additional sponsor exemptions were available for the event, allowing non-member Masters-qualified professionals ranked in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking to participate in the U.S. the week before the Masters. From 1992 to 2017, Shell Oil Company provided sponsorship for the event.

The PGA Tour stated that Shell's sponsorship would cease and look for a new sponsor for 2018. To guarantee that the event would remain in Houston, a group of new sponsors led by Houston Astros owner Jim Crane inked a five-year contract with the PGA Tour at that time. The Astros Foundation oversees the Astros Golf Foundation and is now in charge of the competition. The Astros' 1980s "Rainbow Guts" uniforms inspired the new logo.

The wraparound calendar prevented any events during the 2019 season. The 2019 competition was rescheduled for October 2020 and was the final tournament hosted at the Houston Golf Club. It relocated to the refurbished Memorial Park Golf Course for the 2021 season. With golfer Brooks Koepka's advice, the Astros Foundation donated $34 million to renovate and remodel the golf course facilities. The PGA Tour announced schedule modifications for the 2020–21 season, including moving the Houston Open to November 5–8, one week before the Masters Tournament, due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Vivint funded the competition, and the Astros Foundation permitted spectators.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise was the event sponsor for the 2022 season, which began in November 2021. Cadence Bank sponsored the November 2022 event for the 2023 season. The PGA Tour will resume its calendar-year schedule for the 2024 tournament, sponsored by Texas Children's Hospital and return to a spring date in March.

Texas Children's Houston Open 2024 Course

Memorial Park is a municipally owned golf course five miles west of Houston's downtown. It was first opened as a nine-hole facility in the early 1900s and was expanded into a complete 18-hole layout in 1936. Because of its proximity to Houston's city centre, the John Bredemus design was a perfect choice for the Houston Open, held from 1951 until 1963.

The facilities at a course that receives over 60,000 rounds annually had become worn out and needed refurbishment, as one might expect. Tom Doak undertook a $18.5 million refurbishment, his first project to host an annual PGA Tour event, and the Astros Golf Foundation funded it. While adding his own tactics and contemporary elements, Doak kept many of Bredemus' design elements, with help from Brooks Koepka. Creating a golf course that can challenge the world's greatest players and satisfy weekend warriors is difficult.

To accomplish this, Doak cleared out many trees and overgrown vegetation that hindered play and prevented healthy turf development in particular locations. The fairways were expanded to allow for regular play, but accuracy is needed to position yourself to attack the greens.

Some pin positions are quite approachable due to the undulating putting surfaces, while other pin placements are suitable for tournament play. Doak and Koepka deliberately chose to build a course that would produce drama and scoring possibilities down the stretch while also putting daring water hazards on the closers to contend with instead of attempting to defend par.

Furthermore, there are just 19 bunkers on the course, which is extremely non-Doak, considering that most of the courses he designs have 19 bunkers in the opening few holes. The general public benefits from the lack of sand, and the city has fewer maintenance concerns. Speaking of sand, the irrigation pond was tripled in size, and the extra soil was utilised to give the property some dimension. The fairways and greens were topped with it to enable better drainage in a city that receives a lot of rain. On a relatively level stretch of land, the ravine that runs through the course lends some character and a welcome change of scenery.

Although the topography and route provide for a stroll, wheelchairs are accessible all year round. They are especially advised during Houston's intense summer months when temperatures can soar to oppressive heights. Overall, Memorial Park is among the nation's top municipal golf courses.
