Originally set to headline UFC 297 a month earlier, this matchup was rescheduled due to Volkanovski being redirected to face UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 294. Ilia Topuria dethroned the champion Volkanovski via a KO in the second round.

The co-main event for the upcoming fight card is a middleweight showdown between former UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker and former title contender Paulo Costa.
