Kirie and Shuichi’s life in Kurouzu-Cho town in Uzumaki
In the beginning of the series, Shuichi mentions to Kirie about some mysterious force in the town that seems to be taking over. At first, Kirie fails to understand what Shuichi is talking about until the spiral begins to affect the townspeople intensely. First event unfolds the influences of the spiral when Shuichi’s father dies and his mother eventually goes insane and dies after witnessing for herself the gruesome effects of the spiral.
Kirie still doesn’t seem to understand about the grave reality of the spiral and its effects. However, the spiral begins to grow its range of effects rapidly as it grows to influence several people in the town. First, there are random disappearances and deaths, followed by strange examples of obsession with the pattern; subsequently, there are more serious consequences, such as several storms and hurricanes. Ultimately, the town of Kurouzu-Cho is rebuilt into a giant spiral row-house with everyone in the town absorbed into the City of Spirals.

Kirie and Shuichi in City of Spirals
Kirie and Shuichi walk down the spiral staircase together; it appears it was constructed centuries or maybe longer ago. A spiral victim soon stops them and wants to go with them, but they are too tired to carry him. Kirie is grabbed by the spiral victim, which bites her ankle when it becomes aggressive. Kirie is unable to see Shuichi as he rips it off her and gets shoved down the stairway.
She finds herself at the City of Spirals, the capital of the sentient, malicious Spiral that has been destroying their town, as she falls down the stairs. The city slowly sinks beneath her, made up entirely of the bodies of Kurouzu-Cho's spiral-cursed residents, including her parents, who are all inclined toward the massive spiral that looms over them. She hears Shuichi calling out to her. He encourages Kirie to go on without him and keep fighting since he believes they are getting close to breaking the spiral curse. He tells Kirie to keep fighting and carry on without him since he thinks they are extremely close to breaking the spiral curse.
However, Kirie lacks the will to fight against the spirals thus she is also engulfed in Shuichi's arms. Both of them are frozen in time, with their arms half-spinning and their hands clasped together. They will be able to move "when the eternal spiral awakens once more," which is indicated to be in a few hundred years.
