This mark also broke the Oregon high school state record, which stood until his cousin, Sam Crouser, surpassed it the following year.
Crouser's show of talent continued in 2009 when he won both the 5 kg shot put and the 1.5 kg discus at the national youth championships. This performance earned him a spot to represent the United States at the 2009 World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy. At this event, Crouser claimed gold in shot put, breaking the championship record with a throw of 70 feet 9 inches (21.56 m) in the fifth round. He also secured a silver medal in the discus event. Despite experiencing a foot injury during his junior year, Crouser returned to peak form in 2011, his senior year. He broke the national high school indoor record in the 12 lb (5.44 kg) shot put with a throw of 77 feet 2.75 inches (23.54 m), placing him second on the all-time national high school list behind Mike Carter's outdoor record.
Outdoors, Crouser further made it big by breaking the national high school record in the discus, throwing 237 feet 6 inches (72.40 m), breaking Mason Finley's previous record from 2009 by a foot.
