India’s PV Sindhu had to settle for second best in the final of the Denmark Open Superseries Premier after losing in straight games 21-19 21-12 to defending champion Li Xuerui of China on Sunday.
The opening game saw the Chinese take an early 3-2 lead, but Sindhu fought back very well, winning 4 out of the next 7 points to make it 6-6. It was a topsy-turvy affair for a brief while after that, but at the 10-10 mark the Indian seemed to have take control of proceedings, winning 6 points straight to lead 16-10.
But Li, who is also the reigning Olympic champion, fought back splendidly to win 7 consecutive points of her own to take a 17-16 lead and then at the 18-18 mark, won 3 out of the next 4 points to win the game 21-19 and take a vital one game lead.
The second game turned out to be much more one-sided contest as Li dominated from the start and Sindhu eventually couldn't quite muster up a comeback, going down 21-12 and finishing as the runners-up.
Despite that result, it has been an absolutely fantastic tournament for Sindhu, who defeated three top-10 ranked players en route to the final and should, therefore, be mighty proud of her performance in the tournament.
