In a huge upset, India’s HS Prannoy defeated former World No.1 and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan 14-21 21-11 21-17 in the opening round of the French Open Superseries on Wednesday.
The first game started as a closely-fought contest, but Dan assumed control of proceedings from the 6-6 mark, winning 4 points straight to go 10-6 up and then maintained that lead throughout to eventually seal the game 21-14.
The second game proved to be a one-sided affair as the Indian stormed back into the contest, dominating his much-favoured opponent throughout to clinch the second game 21-11 and take the match into a decider.
The decider saw the Indian get off to a fast start as the Indian took a 7-0 lead to put the dan completely on the back foot. But the two-time World champion started to claw his way back into the game and won 15 of the next 23 points to make it 15-15.
But the Indian came back splendidly to win 6 out of the next 7 points to clinch the match and progress through to the second round.
