HS Prannoy through to the second round

World No.12 HS Prannoy moved into the second round of 2015 Worlds Championships after beating Alex Yuwan Tjong of Brazil 21-12 21-16 in the opening round on Monday.

Right from the opening game, the Indian dominated proceedings, not allowing his Brazilian opponent to take any control of proceedings, and led 11-5 at the interval mark. Following the break, the Indina continued to run away with the game and eventually sealed the opening game 21-12.

The Brazilian began the second game on a positive note, racing away to a 7-1 early lead and pegging Prannoy back significantly. After a slight break, Prannoy looked to come back into the match, by virue of a few smashes, winning 5 out of the next 6 points to reduce the deficit to 6-8. But a few errors on his part meant the Prannoy fell back once again trailed 9-11 at the interval mark.

After the interval, the match began evenly but at the 13-13 mark, it was Prannoy who took the vital lead by winning 2 points straight and then maintained that lead to pile on the pressure on his opponent.

He eventually wrapped up the contest in the third of his 6 match point oppotunities to progress through to the second round.

Speaking after the victory, Prannoy said that he felt a bi rusty in the second game and stressed about enjoying in the second round.

“ Good to be back on winning days after injury. Was rusty in the second game but had to change the game a bit to attacking mode & then I got my rhythm back. Good first round for me. Need to trust myself and enjoy the next round too, without taking extra pressure. Never played him ( Edwin Ekiring) but he is a good player. Cannot take him easily and I need to be on my toes day after. “
