The Indian Women's doubles pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa crashed out of the Badminton World Championships, losing 25-23 21-14 to the unseeded Japanese pair of Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao of Japan ion the quarterfinals on Friday.
The opening game proved to be a nail-biting affair as both pairs exchanged leads at regular intervals but at the 11-11 mark, it was the Japanese duo who took the lead, winning 4 points straight to go 15-11 up. But Gutta and Ponnappa fought back to bring the back to level terms at 15-15, after which it proved to be riveting contest, until the 23-23 mark, when Fukuman and Yonao took the lead and converted the game point opportunity soon after to take a one-game lead.
The second game proved to be a less tighther affair as Fulkuman and Yonao started to dominate proceedings from the start, therebt putting increasing pressure on the Indian pair and eventuall won the game 21-14 to move into the semifinals of the tournament.
This will come as a bit of a blow for the doubles pair, considering that it was an ideal opportunity to book a spot inthe Olympics and it would now mean that they will have bring their A -game out in the remianing tournaments in order to seal a berth in the Summer Games, next year.
