Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, India's sole representation in the women's doubles event at the Paris Olympics 2024, will play their opening match on Saturday, July 27. For Ponnappa, this marks her third outing at the marquee competition, while it is Crasto's debut at the Summer Games.
The Indians have a difficult match lined up on Saturday, as they take on South Korea’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalists Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong. While the two pairs have never encountered each other, Ponappa and Crasto will be the underdogs going into the match, as they are currently ranked 19th in the world, while their opponents are the World No. 8.
The Indians will be in action at (or after) 8:20 pm as they square off against their South Korean foes.
Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto have been placed in Group C. Apart from Yeong and Yong, the group includes Japanese third seeds Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida and Australia’s Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu. The Indians will need to win at least two of their three matches in order to make it past the group-stage matches.
