World No. 26 Indian Badminton star Ajay Jayaram caused a huge upset as he completely outclassed the World No. 7 Vietnamese shuttler Tien Minh Nguyen in the first round of Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open 2013.
Jayaram, who is supported by Olympic Gold Quest thrashed 2013 World Championships bronze medalist Nguyen 21-7 21-12 in a match which lasted for just 25 minutes.
The 26-year-old Indian shuttler looked in top form in this match. Leading by 2-1 in the first game Jayaram grabbed the next 7 points to make the score 9-1. With the help of nine smash winners, Jayaram had absolutely no difficulty in winning the opening game.
Second game was a lot more similar to the first game. Jayaram took the lead in the initial part of the game and then further increased it.
Jayaram will now play the World No. 15 Soni Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia in the second round of the tournament.
Second good news of the day came from the women’s singles category where star Indian shuttler and 7th seeded Saina Nehwal defeated World No. 30 Bellaetrix Manuputty of Indonesia 21-14 and 21-16. Saina Nehwal will now face the World No. 13 Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand in the next round.
However World Championships Bronze medalist and World No. 10 Indian Badminton teen sensation P.V Sindhu lost to the World no.2 Thai shuttler Intanon Ratchanok 21-16 21-17 in the opening round.
In men’s doubles category Russian pair of Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov ruled out Indian pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy 21-9 21-15 whereas another Indian pair of Akshay Dewalkar and Prannav Jerry Chopra gave a tough fight to the top seeded Indonesian pair of Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsaan but unfortunately lost 18-21 19-21.
In mixed doubles category of the tournament,World ranked 37 Indian pair of Tarun Kona and Ashwini Ponappa lost to the World no. 8 Indonesian pair of Pravinna Jordan and Vita Marissa 21-19 19-21 21-17 in the first round.
