A good start not backed by consistency for Sindhu
Going specifically by the indications she gave at the Premier Badminton League, you would have thought that this would be PV Sindhu's year. The 20-year-old looked in very good form in the competition, winning all of her matches and taking her side, the Chennai Smashers into the semifinals of the competition.
She backed that with an equally impressive showing at the Malaysia Grand Prix gold, where she won the title to raise further optimism among the Indian badminton fraternity.
But, like in 2015, the one factor that was so sorely missed among the Indian shuttlers, Consistency, came back to haunt a lot of the players and Sindhu was one among them.
Early losses in some high-profile competitions like the All England Championships didn’t help her cause one bit and it seemed like it was the same story once again of the Indian, failing to keep up to the good starts and not delivering on a regular basis in competitions around the world.
She did show that she was working on her game and trying to get better at the Thomas and Uber Cup , putting her long reach to good use in some of the matches, but failed to close out what looked a certain win in the second game against Wang Shixian in the semifinal.
A lot of work, not just in terms of her technical aspects, but also the mental aspect remains and it would be interesting to see how the Indian makes use of these preparation weeks and then put her best foot forward at Rio in August.
