Top seeds Pranaav Chopra and Sikki Reddy beat the Canadian pair of Toby Ng and Rachel Honderich 21-15, 21-16 in straight games to clinch the mixed doubles title at the Brazil Grand Prix on Sunday.
Earlier the Indian pair defeated Fabian Holzer and Barbara Bellenberg of Germany to move to the finals in Foz do Iguacu. Toby-Rachel came through a difficult, three game match against Michael Fuchs and Eva Janssens of Germany 16-21, 21-19, 21-17 in the other semi-final.
Fourth seed Anand Pawar, who is the only Indian competing in men’s singles, went down to top seed Zulfadli Zulkiffli of Malaysia 21-18, 11-21, 17-21 in the men's final earlier in the day.
The 30-year old Pawar, ranked 75th in the world, had earlier upset the odds to beat second seed Misha Zilberman from Israel in the semi-finals. The men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy and women's singles player Saili Rane had withdrawn from the tournament.
A part of the BWF Grand Prix competitions, this is one of the main events in the Brazilian badminton calendar. Coincidentally, this is the first time an Indian shuttler had finished on the podium in the Brasil Open.
