With the Paris Olympics done and dusted, badminton action will return to its normal schedule starting on Tuesday, August 20, with the Japan Open Super 750. While all of India's Olympians have opted out of the event in order to rest and recover, badminton enthusiasts in the country will be treated to some exciting matches as the up and comers of the nation try and make a name for themselves.
Leading the charge for a title finish in the men's singles event will be Kiran George. The 24-year-old will be taking on Japan's Kanta Tsuneyama in his first round, and will likely run into Singapore's former world champion Loh Kean Yew next. Joining George as the only other Indian in the category is Sathish Kumar Karunakaran.
Meanwhile, India's women's singles contingent in Japan consists of Aakarshi Kashyap, Malvika Bansod, as well as Ashmita Chaliha. Chaliha has the hardest draw of the lot, as she is drawn to face former World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying in the opening round itself.
On the doubles end of things, India will be represented in only the women's and mixed events. The sibling duo of Rutuparna/Swetaparna Panda are participating in the former, while the pairs of Sathish Kumar Karunakaran/Aadya Variyath and Sumeeth Reddy/Sikkim Reddy will take the court for the latter.
