In the most awaited clash of the quarterfinals in the Women’s Singles category today, Indian sensation Saina Nehwal failed to register her berth in the prestigious semi-finals line up of the tournament. The World No.4 Saina Nehwal was defeated by Korean smasher Ji Hyun Sung by 13-21, 21-18, 21-19.
In the first game of the match, it was a neck to neck clash between the two players. At one point of game, the scores were levelled to 11-11. Soon after that, Saina took the charge over her Korean opponent and won the game comfortably by 21-13.
After winning the first game of the match, the second game didn’t come in favour of Saina Nehwal. The Indian smasher was leading in the beginning but the Korean shuttler levelled the game 11-11 at one stage of the match. Ji Hyun Sung continued her dominating performance in the rest half of the game and didn’t allow Saina to make a comeback in the game. Saina lost the game by 18-21 and the match progressed to the decisive final game.
It was a situation of do or die for both the contestants. The game began in favour of Saina. As the game progressed, it became an interesting face-off when the game levelled after every second point. It was difficult to predict the winner even before the last couple of minutes. In the final minutes, the score levelled with 19-19. But at the end, it was Ji Hyun Sung who held her nerves in the crucial moment of the game and clinched the nail-biting game by 21-19. With her win over the World No.4 Saina, Ji Hyun Sung registered her slot in the semi-finals of the tournament.
By the defeat of defending champion Saina, Indian opportunity in the Women’s Singles category has come to an end in the Yonex Denmark Open 2013.
Now, the only Indian hope left in the tournament is R.M.V. Gurusaidutt in the Men’s Singles category.
