There is very little argument when one says that in recent times, the Indian badminton contingent have given some very joyous moments for fans and spectators in the country. India currently has two players in Men’s Singles in Kidambi Srikanth and Parupalli Kashyap, who are ranked 4th and 8th in the world respectively.
The Women’s doubles pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa are in the number 10 spot in the rankings while the biggest achievement, of which each one of us can be proud off is Saina Nehwal being ranked Number 1 in the world in the Women’s Singles category.
But on Sunday, India had another proud moment to savor, when the Indian para-badminton team won an overall tally of 11 medals at the recently concluded Para-Badminton World Championships, that were held in Stoke Mandeville in England between September 8th and 13th.
The situation with para-athletics in India in recent times has created a lot of negative news in recent times, with the Sports Ministry suspending the Paralympic Committee of India in April. The International Paralympic Committee had prior to that derecognised the body as well, but later on, allowed the Indian para-athletes to compete under the IPC Flag.
This news then certainly comes as a breath of fresh air for the para-athlete community in India and here’s hoping for more positive new from their end in the future as well.
