(8) Saina Nehwal (WR #9) vs (5) Carolina Marin (WR #4)
Head-to-head: Marin leads 6-5
Last meeting: Marin def Nehwal 21-16, 21-13 at the semi-finals of the 2019 Malaysia Masters
Continuing from where she left at the Malaysia Masters last week, Indian shuttle queen Saina Nehwal has gone a step further this week by reaching the final at the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2019.
This is Nehwal's second consecutive final at this Super 500 tournament currently going on in Jakarta, having finished as the runner-up to World No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying last year.
With a semi-final in Kuala Lumpur and at least a final now this week, Saina has undoubtedly made the best start to the new season out of all Indian shuttlers.
Her wins over the higher-ranked Nozomi Okuhara last week and He Bingjiao in the semi-finals of the Indonesia Masters yesterday have thoroughly proved her hunger and determination. At 28, she is the oldest top 10 player in women's singles and is an inspiration to all the rising stars.
However, no matter how motivated she looks, the challenge remains as tough as last week for the London Olympic bronze medallist. For the second time in as many weeks, she faces the reigning Olympic champion, Carolina Marin.
The three-time world champion lost the Malaysia Masters final last Sunday to Ratchanok Intanon where her attacking game failed to find a way to make in-roads into the Thai's variety and finesse. Marin would surely be making every effort not to squander a second chance at winning a title.
Her aggression, movement and speed were all spot on against Nehwal in their last showdown.
Until and unless she is tired after her exploits at the Premier Badminton League and now in the new BWF season, it looks unlikely that the Marin juggernaut will stop.
