India finally had something to cheer about on Day one of the Australian Open after the pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa won their first round women’s doubles clash 21-13 21-13 against tha pair of Samantha Barning and Iris Tabeling of Netherlands.
The first game saw the Indian duo win 5 consecutive points on the trot as compared to the opponent’s 3 and also converted the solitary game point opportunity to take the first game 21-13.
The second game saw a similar tale unfold as the pairing of Gutta and Ponnappa maintained the pressure on the Netherlands pair to clinch the game and progress to the second round of the competition.
