It has been a disappointing outing for the Women’s Doubles pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa. The duo, playing their second Olympics as a pair, haven’t been able to bring their A-game to the fore and now find themselves playing for pride.
If you to describe the reason for their poor performance in a singles word, it would be coordination. While Ashwini has been very good at the far end of the court, the same can’t be said about Jwala at the near end, who has been unable to consistently retrieve the shuttle, thereby losing out on points. A better coordination will be vital for them to beat the Thia duo.
On Saturday, they will be up against the Thailand pairing of Puttita Supajirakul/Sapsiree Taerattanchai, who are also out of contention for a place in the Round of 16 and will also compete for pride.
The match on Saturday could also be the last outing for Jwala on the Olympic stage and if it is so, then she would hope to finish off on a high.
