The Indian women’s doubles pairing of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa clinched the 2015 Canada Open title, after beating the Netherlands pair of Eefge Muskens and Selena Piek 21-19 21-16 in the final on Sunday.
Game 1 proved to be an extremely tight affair, right from the word go, as both went toe-to-toe, but as is the case with such games, the pair that wins those crucial points are the ones who come out on top eventually and Gutta and Ponnappa managed to do just that, when at the 19-19 mark, they, first secured the lone game point opportunity and then converted it to take ann important one game lead.
The second game began on a far less stressful note, as Gutta and Ponnappa raced to an early 5-0 lead and then, further built on to that advantage by 5 points straight, to go from 10-6 up to 15-6 up.
But that’s when a remarkable turnaround occurred as the Dutch pair came storming back to win 9 points too straight to tie the game at 15-15 and put the match back on an even keel. But the pairing of Gutta and Ponnappa didn't buckle down under pressure and instead brought their A-game out to win 6 out of the next 7 points and seal the game and the title.
This is the Indian pairing’s maiden title after they teamed up once again after the London Olympic in 2012.
