Thursday will be a bitter-sweet day for India’s top ranked men’s singles badminton player Parupalli Kashyap.
The Hyderabad lad, who earlier in the day broke into the top-10 in the latest World Badminton Federation rankings, in the processing achieving his career-high ranking, was left deeply disappointed after he crashed out in the second round of the Malaysian Open.
The 25-year-old Indian, who recently won his first international singles crown – the Syed Modi International Tournament - fought hard against sixth seed and world number 15 Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark but inconsistency spelt his doom.
He fought tooth and nail in the opening game, but Jorgensen forged ahead winning four points in a row to clinch it at 21-17. The opening game loss took the sting out of Kashyap’s game as he started to commit unforced errors on a regular basis much to the comfort of his Danish opponent.
Jorgensen bagged the crucial points in the second game and closed out the match at 21-14 in a contest that lasted 37 minutes.
Despite the second round exit, Kashyap would be celebrating his career-high ranking climb. After all, becoming world number 10 is no small achievement.
Hopefully, sponsors would take note of his latest exploits.
