After a chaotic opening day at the Malaysia Open which saw multiple matches delayed due to a leaky roof, Wednesday (January 8) brought an exciting string of matches at the event. Multiple Indians took the court today in Kuala Lumpur, delivering some impressive results.
First up was the mixed doubles duo of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila. The pair was squaring off against the lower ranked Ko Sung Hyun and Eom Hye Won and delivered an impeccable performance to clinch a 21-13, 21-14 win in just 30 minutes.
Up next on the same court, was HS Prannoy, making his much awaited return to action. Prannoy was battling Brian Yang at the Axiata Arena yesterday and was up by a game, when the leaky roof interrupted their match and forced play to be paused at 21-12, 9-11.
Today, the two shuttlers resumed the game from the same scoreline, and Yang forced a decider when he claimed the second game 21-17. However the Indian quickly found his rhythm when he needed it the most, taking a 21-15 win to move forward into the Round of 16.
Elsewhere in the men's singles draw of the Malaysia Open, Priyanshu Rajawat was handed a thumping defeat at the hands of Chinese World No. 7 Li Shi Feng. Feng started the match on an incredible note, and kept up that momentum to claim a 21-11, 21-16 win in under 40 minutes.
Meanwhile, the men's doubles matches saw Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty claim a win over Ming Che Lu and Tang Kai Wei after surviving a scare in the second game. On the other hand, the women's doubles duo of Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto were handed a straight-games defeat in their opening round Misaki Matsutomo and Chihara Shida.
The women's singles matches at the Malaysia Open saw Malvika Bansod get her season off to an impressive start, as she claimed a 21-15, 21-16 victory over Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei. Elsewhere, Aakarshi Kashyap suffered a loss to Denmark's Julie Dawall Jakobsen, and Anupama Upadhyay succumbed to Pornpawee Chochuwang after a gruelling battle that went the full length.
