The Indian contingent had a busy opening day at the BWF Arctic Open, collecting six wins from seven matches. The young stars of the country pulled off some impressive performances, though PV Sindhu was shown the door in the first round itself.
Getting the ball rolling on Tuesday, October 8, was Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, as he took to court for the men's singles qualification matches. The youngster failed to move past the challenge of Frenchman Arnaud Merkle, losing 6-21, 13-21.
Immediately after this, Kiran George avenged Karunakaran’s loss, taking down Merkle’s compatriot Lucas Claerbout in a grueling match that went the full distance. George won 21-16, 13-21, 21-19.
On the women's singles end of things at the Arctic Open, Malvika Bansod kept her impressive form from the China Open going. The youngster took down World No. 23 Sung Shuo Yun in straight games (21-19, 24-22) in 57 minutes. Alongside Bansod, both Aakarshi Kashyap and Unaati Hooda also cleared their first round.
Elsewhere, sixth seed PV Sindhu failed to make it past the opening round as she lost 16-21, 10-21 to Canada's Michelle Li. This marked the Indian's first outing since the Paris Olympics 2024.
The Arctic Open mixed doubles saw a win for Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath as they outdid their Estonian opponents in straight games (21-14, 21-9).
