India's men's singles campaign was in the spotlight on Day 2 of the Arctic Open, with both Kiran George and Lakshya Sen safely making it through to the pre-quarters. George had to battle his way past a skilled opponent, while Sen was gifted a walkover.
Of the two shuttlers, it was Kiran George who took to court first, squaring off against Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu Wei. The Indian walked into the match very much the underdog, having lost both of his previous encounters with the World No.25.
However, fresh off of an impressive victory in the qualification rounds, George was able to keep that form going today. The 24-year-old had a lukewarm start to his game, but warmed up quickly, dictating rallies and staying patient when it mattered the most to pull ahead 23-21.
While Wang tried to claw his way back into the match in the second game, George was quick to shut down any questions of a comeback, sealing the deal 21-18.
Elsewhere, fans excited to watch Lakshya Sen back in action for the first time since the Paris Olympics were left disappointed as the Indian was handed a walkover by Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke. The 23-year-old will now take on seventh seed Chou Tien Chen in his round of 16 match at the Arctic Open.
Meanwhile, Kiran George will take on Jonatan Christie tomorrow. Thursday will also be a busy day for the Indian women, as Malvika Bansod will battle Ratchanok Intanon, Unaati Hooda will face Michelle Li, while Aakarshi Kashyap tries to get the better of second seed Han Yue.
