Day four of the ongoing Canada Open saw Priyanshu Rajawat pull off yet another upset as he took down first seed Anders Antonsen. Elsewhere, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost their quarterfinal match.
First up on court was Rajawat, as he took on first seed and World No. 4 Anders Antonsen. The Indian came into this match having upset eight seed and Antonsen’s compatriot Rasmus Gemke, and fans were hoping to see him pull off another such feat, with their wishes coming true.
The first game started out as a close affair, but Rajawat bounded out of the Dane’s reach post the mid-game interval, claiming four and then seven points in a row to win 21-11. Not one to be bogged down, Antonsen orchestrated quite the comeback in the second game, forcing the Indian into a decider 21-17.
The final game began in favour of Rajawat, with the youngster jumping ahead to a 5-1 lead. From there, the Indian continued that momentum, storming to a 21-19 win to seal his spot in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand's run at the Canada Open saw them lose to fairly lower-ranked opponents. The Indian World No.22 were up against Taiwanese Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En-Tzu, who are ranked 140th in the world.
As the match began, it was Shan and En-Tzu who quickly claimed the upper hand. The Taiwanese were always a step ahead of their opponents before breaking away to win the opening game.
While Jolly and Gopichand rallied in the second game to take their foes into the decider, it didn't turn out to be enough. The Indians lost 18-21, 21-19, 16-21.
