The pre-quarterfinals round at the Malaysia Open brought with it some exciting badminton action. India had multiple shuttlers on the court today (January 9), with the nation's contingent being dealt some heavy losses.
First up was the mixed doubles duo of Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila, who went down in straight games to Chinese seventh seeds Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi. India's other mixed doubles pair, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath, were dealt a similar fate at the hands of home favorites Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie.
Elsewhere, Treesa Jolly and Gayathri Gopichand faced off against Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian. Jolly and Gopichand got off to a strong start, clinching the opening game, but were unable to hold on to that momentum and eventually lost 21-15, 18-21, 19-21.
The only Indian doubles pair to survive the pre-quarterfinals round at the Malaysia Open was that of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who took down Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub Azriyn and Tan Wee Kiong in their match. The Indians needed only two games and 42 minutes to get rid of their opponents.
On the singles end of things at the Malaysia Open, HS Prannoy was dealt a devastating loss at the hands of long-time rival Li Shi Feng. The Indian started the match on the backfoot, losing the first game, before fighting back in the second to force a decider. The final game was a closely fought affair, with Feng eventually taking the win 21-8, 15-21, 23-21.
Meanwhile, the women's singles matches saw Malvika Bansod fall short to Han Yue, despite a valiant fight in the first game.
