Quarterfinals day at the Malaysia Open brought with it an exciting duel for Indian badminton enthusiasts. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty took on home favorites Yew Sin Ong and Ee Yi Teo in a thrilling match, claiming a hard-fought victory to move into the semifinals.
The match began at a harrowing pace, with both pairs giving their hundred percent from the start. While the Malaysians took a 2-0 lead at the very beginning, Rankireddy and Shetty were quick to close that small gap and move forward, heading into the interval with the scoreline reading 11-9 in their favor.
The Indians always managed to stay just one step ahead of their opponents, and at 18-16, it looked like they'd be walking away comfortably with the opener. However, Ong and Teo fought tooth and nail, evening things up at 19-19, and moving ahead a point later. Not ones to let go without a fight, Rankireddy and Shetty then went on to save four match points, before clinching the first game 26-24.
The Indian duo started the second game on the backfoot, and were trailing 1-4 early on. While they managed to whittle down the gap a little, they were still behind by two points at the mid-game interval.
However, the one-minute break seemingly turned the tide for the World No. 7s, and they claimed four straight points, moving ahead 12-11. From there on, it was only a matter of time before Rankireddy and Shetty established their dominance, claiming a 21-15 victory to move into the semifinals of the Malaysia Open.
