The round-of-16 matches of the BWF US Open saw a triumphant day for Indian shuttlers, as all but the men's doubles pair of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek made it through to the quarterfinals. Fans were treated to some delightful action as Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand, Priyanshu Rajawat, and Malvika Bansod all notched hard-fought victories.
Getting the day started for India, the duos of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek as well as Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand took to court nearly simultaneously at the Fort Worth Convention Centre in Houston, Texas.
The former got to business on court one, playing Malaysia's unseeded Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith. Garaga and Pratheek, who were the sixth seeds at the US Open, are ranked 10 rungs higher than their opponents but went down fighting throughout three games(17-21, 21-19, 19-21).
Meanwhile, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were busy battling it out on court two against Shan Pei Hsieh and Hung En-Tzu. The Indians had a slow start, losing the first game before making a resounding comeback to claim victory 16-21, 21-11, 21-19.
On the singles end of things at the US Open, both Priyanshu Rajawat and Malvika Bansod were scheduled to compete in the afternoon session of the day. Rajawat was up against Taiwanese Huang Yu Kai, showing him the door in just 35 minutes with a scoreline of 21-18, 21-16.
On the other hand, Bansod had to fight harder for her victory, coming from a game down. Playing Czechia’s Tereza Švabikoba, the Indian lost the first game 15-21, before bouncing back 21-19, 21-14 to clinch her spot in the quarterfinals.
