Quarter-final action at the BWF US Open saw a big surprise for Indian badminton enthusiasts when Malvika Bansod smashed her way past Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour to make it to the final four. On the other hand, men's singles star Priyanshu Rajawat, and women's doubles second seeds Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand were unable to make it past their opponents.
Bansod was the first of the three Indians to take to court today. She headed into the match against World No.22 and third seed Kirsty Gilmour with a 1-2 disadvantage in the head-to-head. The Scott got off to a strong start, taking a 9-1 lead in the opening game and continuing that momentum to win 21-10.
For a minute it looked like the Indian sixth seed would be handed another defeat at the hands of her 30-year-old foe. However, Bansod fought back in an epic comeback, taking the next two games 21-15, 21-10 to clinch her second victory over Gilmour.
While Malvika Bansod was battling Kirsty Gilmour on court one of the Fort Worth Convention Centre, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand were busy on court three, facing Japan's Rui Hirokami and Yuna Kato. Unlike Bansod, Jolly and Gopichand went into the match as favorites for the win, being ranked 12 rungs higher than their opponents.
The match got off to an electric start, and the Indian World No.23 managed to claim the first game 21-17. However, a Japanese resurgence post the break saw Hirokami and Kato run away with the win 21-17 21-19.
The last Indian in action today at the US Open was Priyanshu Rajawat. The youngster was up against China's Lei Lan Xi, whom he had beaten earlier this year at the Swiss Open in March.
Unfortunately, Rajawat wasn’t able to pull off the same feat today, as Xi proved too much to handle for the Indian. He went down fighting 21-15, 11-21, 18-21.
