After an impressive run, Treesa Jolly and Gayathri Gopichand’s campaign at the BWF World Tour Finals has drawn to a close. The pair went down fighting against Japan's Nami Matsuyama and Chihara Shidu in their last group-stage match.
Jolly and Gopichand were the only Indians to qualify for the Tour Finals, and they had a lot to prove. Their opening match saw them take on World No.1s Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning, a battle they lost after a lengthy fight. However, the duo bounced back soon enough, showing the door to Malaysia's Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in straight games the next day.
With that win, they kept alive their hopes of making it to the semifinals of the BWF World Tour Finals, with Nami Matsuyama and Chihara Shidu the only remaining obstacles.
While Treesa Jolly and Gayathri Gopichand came into Friday's (December 13) game as the underdogs, expectations for the duo were high after their impressive run against the Malaysians yesterday. True to the hype, the match got off to an intense start, with both pairs trading points back and forth. Eventually, Matsuyama and Shidu inched away at the interval, before winning the first game 21-17.
The Japanese kept that momentum going in the second game, and while Jolly and Gopichand tried to stage a comeback it simply wasn't enough. The World No.4’s took the win 21-13.
