The Yonex-Sunrise Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta Memorial All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2023 is taking place in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, concluded on October 12. The tournament saw India’s top senior shuttlers battle it out at the District Sports Stadium during the week-long affair.
In what was a thrilling seven days of badminton, fans got to witness several extraordinary performances and even big upsets. While top seed Kartikey Gulshan Kumar claimed the men’s singles title, the women’s singles winner, Shreya Lele, had to battle her way through the qualifying rounds. She then made her way to the final of the tournament and won it.
Another noteworthy performance was seen from Kavya Gupta. The shuttler from Delhi claimed the mixed doubles title with partner Chayanit Joshi. She narrowly missed out on winning a double and had to settle for silver in the women’s doubles category.
A closer look at all the results
In the men's singles category, Delhi’s Kartikey Gulshan Kumar emerged as the victor after a thrilling final against Maisnam Meiraba. The match went the distance, but Kartikey managed to keep his composure in the decider.
He sealed the title with a score of 21-17, 17-21, 21-14. Rahul Bhardhvaj B. M. and Siddhanth Gupta were the two losing semifinalists.
The women's singles final saw an all-Gujarat affair, with Shreya Lele and Adita Rao battling it out. The second seed, Adita, fought valiantly against her opponent but fell short. 18-year-old Lele secured the win with a score of 21-16, 21-15.
Both shuttlers played marathon semifinal matches on the morning of the final. Shreya got the better of Navya Kanderi, while Adita beat Maharashtra’s Shruti Mundada. In the quarterfinal, Lele also caused an upset by beating top-seeded Anupama Upadhyaya in an exciting three-set encounter.
The men's doubles category witnessed a captivating battle between Suraj Goala and Pruthvi Roy K, and the top-seeded pair of Deep Rambhiya and Akshan Shetty. Suraj and Pruthvi displayed incredible determination and won the final with a score of 21-16, 21-16.
The doubles pairs of Achutaditya Rao Doddavarapu and Venkata Harsha Vardhan, and Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar R were the two losing semifinalist pairs.
In the women's doubles category, Priya Devi Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra emerged victorious, defeating the pair of Kavya Gupta and Deepshikha Singh with a commanding score of 21-15, 21-10 in the final. Samriddhi Singh and Sonali Singh, as well as Arulbala R. and Varshini V. S., displayed exceptional skills in the semifinals but were unable to secure a spot in the final.
The mixed doubles event final saw Kavya Gupta take the court once again with Chayanit Joshi. The duo emerged as the champions, getting the better of Nithin H.V. and Anagha Pai with a score of 21-19, 21-14. Pruthvi Roy K. and Trisha Hegde, and Suraj Goala and Manali Bora were the two losing semifinalists.
