India’s young badminton talents are all set to take on the best in Asia at the upcoming Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Chengdu, China, from August 20 to 25, 2024. After rigorous selection trials in Bengaluru, the Indian squad is all set to make its mark.
Leading the charge in the U-17 category are Gnana Dattu and Tanvi Reddy Andluri, who will be India’s top contenders in the singles events.
In the U-15 category, all eyes will be on Shyam Bindiganavile and Tanvi Patri, who are expected to shine as the top singles players. Notably, Shaina Manimuthu will be competing in two events, the U-17 girls’ singles and the girls’ doubles with partner Aikya Shetty.
India has had success at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in the past. In the last edition, held in Chengdu, the team won a gold, a silver, and a bronze medal. Bornil Changmai was a standout, clinching gold in the U-15 boys' singles.
The team departed for Chengdu on Saturday, fresh from an intense training camp at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati. This camp, overseen by both Indian and international coaches, ensured the players were finely tuned and ready for the challenges ahead.
BAI secretary Sanjay Mishra shared his confidence in the squad returning with multiple medals.
"We’re sending one of our largest squads to the Badminton Asia Championships, and I’m confident we can bring home a good number of medals. The hard work put in by the players and coaches during the camp has set the stage for a strong performance, " said Mishra.
