The Malaysia Open Super 1000 witnessed chaotic scenes on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, as a bizarre roof leak disrupted matches, including Indian shuttler HS Prannoy's first-round clash against Brian Yang of Canada. The unexpected interruption left players and fans frustrated, raising serious questions about the organization of the prestigious tournament.

HS Prannoy, competing in his first tournament since the Paris Olympics 2024, had made an encouraging start. Leading 21-12, 6-3 against Brian Yang, his momentum was derailed when rainwater began seeping through the roof, pooling near the left frontcourt of Court 3. The match was halted after just 25 minutes as the court became increasingly unplayable.

The issue escalated when larger patches of water appeared, with Prannoy gesturing to the chair umpire about the unsafe playing conditions. His coach, RMV Gurusaidutt, was visibly agitated, warning his player of the potential risks of continuing.

Tournament officials, including the referee, inspected the leak, and efforts to address the situation caused an over-an-hour delay, with play resuming around 4:15 PM local time. However, the leak persisted, forcing officials to halt the match again, with Yang leading 11-9 in the second game.

After numerous disruptions, the match was suspended for the day and is scheduled to resume on Wednesday with the scoreline at 21-12, 9-11.

HS Prannoy did not hold back his frustration and took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his displeasure at the poorly managed situation:

“Played for 25 min , took a break for 165 min because of Rain and then again played for 5 more minutes. Shall continue playing the same match tomorrow. Wowwwwwww.”

The repeated delays drew criticism from players and fans alike, as the incident marred what should have been a seamless start to the season-opening Malaysia Open Super 1000 tournament. Here's one reaction:
