Top seeded pair of Manu Attriand B Sumeeth Reddy’s dreams of capturing the men’s doubles title at the $17,500 XXI Peru International 2016 came crashing down as the Indian duo lost a very close final on Sunday. Attri and Reddy were edged 19-21, 21-18, 28-30 by the second seeds Adam Cwalina and Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland in the summit clash. The marathon match lasted 1 hour 13 minutes.
Manu and Sumeeth, who had reached just one BWF quarter-final this year before coming to Peru, were searching for their first title of the season this week. Being the top seeds, they received a bye in the first round that saw them starting with a comfortable 21-13, 21-18 victory over Americans Phillip Chew and Sattawat Pongnairat in the quarters. In the semis on Saturday, the World No. 20 duo had to battle hard for an 18-21, 21-19, 21-13 victory over unseeded Canadians Adrian Liu and Derrick Ng.
But the 27th ranked Polish team, who has a massive record in International-level tournaments, brought all their experience in the final to eventually prevail in the hard-fought, gritty contest. It also helped that they won their last meeting with the Indians prior to Sunday’s clash.
