Ever since winning the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, accolades and awards have been pouring in for shuttler PV Sindhu. The 21-year-old got a rousing reception in Hyderabad on her arrival back to India and has been flooded with awards ever since then.
Her employees – Bharat Petroleum Cooperation Limited (BPCL) – announced a cash reward of Rs. 75 lakh. Rs. 3 crore and 5 crore in cash rewards have been announced respectively by the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments, along with 1,000 square yards of land in each of the two states. The governments will also provide the shuttler with Grade-1 Government jobs in both the states.
The shutter will be also be receiving cash rewards from the Haryana and Madhya Pradesh governments of Rs. 50 lakh each, while the Delhi government has announced a cash award of Rs. 2 crore.
The All India Football Federation and Badminton Association of India announced cash rewards of Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 50 lakh respectively, and the Indian Olympic Association have also announced a reward of Rs. 30 lakh.
On behalf of the Hyderabad Badminton Association, Sachin Tendulkar will be presenting a swanky new BMW beamer worth Rs. 2 crores to the shuttler for her feat, while a Vijayawada-based jewellery chain will rope her in as their brand ambassador.
The Dubai-based Indian businessman Mukkattu Sebastian will also award her with a cash prize of Rs. 33 lakh. She will also be presented with a Mahindra Thar SUV worth Rs. 5.73 lakh, while Bollywood actor Salman Khan had earlier said through his Twitter handle that he will present a sum of Rs. 1.01 lakh to every Indian athlete who took part at the Games.
As per unconfirmed reports, 3-4 builders in Andhra Pradesh are also planning to give away flats to her. While the Railways have announced a cash reward of Rs. 60 lakh for Sakshi Malik, there a similar reward is likely to be announced for Sindhu.
The accolades for the shuttler just go to show the amount of joy she has brought for all Indians. This could just be the start of the recognition that badminton needs to truly flourish in the country.
