The medal drought continues for India as we are yet to win our first medal at Rio 2016. With big names in the contingent failing to make an impact, we have seen the rise of new stars who made it big in their first Olympics. We have stars who made us proud and they are quite a few in number. People like Dattu Bhokanal, Dipa Karmakar, and Lalita Babar were not expected to achieve the heights they did.
However, their brilliance is only a small consolation to the fact that India’s largest ever Olympic contingent has failed to register a single podium finish in any event that they may have participated in. A few of them certainly did get close to a medal but disappointment proceeded invariably.
Day 12 of the Summer Games does not have too much in store for the Indian audience in terms of quantity but we are certainly in for a ride. After ace badminton player Saina Nehwal failed to make an impact in her events, the task was carried forward for another female Badminton player PV Sindhu who played just a bit more consistently than Saina did.
The doubles team in the sport failed abysmally but yet again, the competence of Indians in the sport has been redeemed by Kidambi Srikanth who plays his quarterfinal match against China’s Lin Dan. Lin is the reigning is the reigning Olympic champion and has won Gold in this event for two consecutive Games. With Lin being ranked third in the World, Srikanth faces a tough test ahead of him.
However, he has proved to be quite calm and composed in the face of difficult challenges as he defeated fifth-ranked Jan o Jorgensen in the Round of 16. Irrespective of the result, the match promises to be exciting.
One of the youngest Indian participants at Rio is Aditi Ashok who will feature in her event in the first round of women’s Golf on this day. 18-year old Aditi made history after she became the first and youngest Indian to win the Lalla Aicha Tour School. A lot of hopes ride on her performance.
Before Lalita Babar qualified for the finals of the 3000m Steeplechase event this year, PT Usha was the only woman in Indian history to have achieved that feat. Tomorrow, her protege and student will look to repeat Usha’s feat. Tintu Luka will be competing in the women’s 800m discipline.
She won the silver medal for this event in the 2014 Asian Games and Gold at the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships. We can be positive about her performance.
Two Women wrestlers will also be in action with Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik in action in the Women’s 48kg and 58kg category.
Note: All matches will be telecast Live on Star Sports and are available for live-streaming on hotstar.com. Matches involving Indians will also be available on DD National.
