Saina Nehwal admitted to hospital with knee injury

Nehwal played with a strapped knee during the Rio Olympics

Saina Nehwal, India’s star badminton player, has been admitted to a hospital in her home town, Hyderabad, after a recurrence of the knee injury she suffered before the Rio Olympics.

A bronze medal winner in the 2012 London Olympics, Nehwal had played through injury throughout the tournament, faltering against world number 61 Maria Ulitina in the group stages.

After the match, the 26-year-old had admitted that she had been playing with the injury that she had sustained before her Rio campaign, and had fat pad inflammation on her knee. The problems resurfaced post her opening game, and she was administered dexamethasone after consultation with the IOC doctors.

The injury hampered her participation in the event, with Nehwal looking uncomfortable in her last match, before bowing out 21-18 21-19 in the Group G game against Ulitina. Her father, Harvir Singh, said, “Saina has been hospitalised for the last two days and is undergoing treatment for her injury, which got worse during her match against Maria at Rio Olympics.”

The untimely injury was sustained 10 days before her Rio campaign, and her team tried their best to bring her back in shape for the event. But it proved too little too late in the end.

An MRI scan was also conducted, but her father refused to open up about the results of the same. “The doctors have not revealed the contents of the MRI scan to me. I will be able to talk about it tomorrow, not today,” he added. Saina will be travelling to Mumbai for further check-ups.
