SoliBad all set to rock with flashmob

Badminton’s biggest worldwide event will take place on Saturday.

The second SoliBad Day is likely to see flashmobs in 110 cities around the world, aiming to raise funds for charity through badminton. SoliBad is a foundation that seeks to raise money for charity projects through badminton.

Some of the biggest stars in badminton – including Peter Gade, Nathan Robertson and Wong Choong Hann – will be seen in action. The badminton community will perform a choreographed flashmob to music group Norwegian Recycling’s Miracles in a demonstration of sporting solidarity, and to raise funds for SoliBad’s projects around the world. In India, flashmobs are being held in Chennai and New Delhi.

SoliBad, the foundation that has called for the flashmob, aims to send the message that “the badminton community, from top stars to leisure players can get mobilised to support projects aimed at helping underprivileged children all over the world. And to do so in a joyful manner by gathering and performing the second worldwide Badminton Flashmob.”

Last year, on June 5th 2011, 65 cities from 43 countries joined the record breaking first Flashmob for SoliBad. This year, SoliBad aims to have more than 100 cities from all five continents. Everyone is welcome to join, participate or even organize one in their own country.

Apart from major cities such as London, Vienna, Oslo, Melbourne, Copenhagen, Kuala Lumpur, Munich, Jakarta, Milan, Karachi, Los Angeles, Moscow and Brussels, the flashmob is also being held in lesser-known places such as Amapa (Brazil), Copsa Mica (Romania), Zona Metropolina (Santo Domingo) and Pohnpei (Micronesia).

“This is a great day, a great event and a great cause,” said Peter Gade, SoliBad’s Special Ambassador in a statement. “Be a part of this unique moment together and join us.”

Raphael Sachetat, founder and president of SoliBad, said: “This time, the event will be even bigger with almost twice as many cities participating, including newcomers from very remote places in Oceania such as Saipan, Northern Mariana Island and big cities like New York City or Mexico City. This will also be an opportunity for all the flashmob organizers around the world to raise funds to help some of our new projects – one of which is a badminton academy in Brazil that aims to take children out of their violent environment.”
