The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed the series against the Kansas City Royals on Sunday, but at the cost of Mookie Betts' injury. The All-Star shortstop left the game prematurely after being hit by a pitch.
The Dodgers shortstop was struck by Royals pitcher Dan Altavilla's 97.9 mph pitch in the seventh inning and immediately went to the ground grimacing in pain. He was removed from the game by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who confirmed that the former MVP had sustained a bone fracture in his left hand.
While Roberts stated that the initial scan confirmed Betts' injury is not season-ending, the star shortstop will be out of action for considerable time. Even though the seven-time All-Star has found it tough adjusting to a new role this season, Betts is only behind Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. in terms of productivity from the shortstop position.
The Dodgers will need to find a solution and a potential replacement until the star rejoins the action.
Here are three players who can fill up the shortstop role for the Dodgers:
Bo Bichette:
The Toronto Blue Jays shortstop was rumored to be a target for the Dodgers even before the Mookie Betts injury. Although the Blue Jays slugger is amidst an underwhelming season, he is more than capable of filling in for the injured Betts.
The 26-year-old does not hit free agency until 2026, but the Blue Jays can cash in on the two-time All-Star with the Dodgers looking at a potential long-term fix for the shortstop position.
Willy Adames:
The NL West leaders have been linked with Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames since the offseason and the Betts' injury might just instigate the Dodgers front office into action.
Adames is in his final year of the contract, something that would interest the Dodgers front office. However, the Brewers are reportedly interested in a young pitcher in exchange for their coveted shortstop. The Dodgers can look at Landon Knack as an option in a potential deal for the Brewers shortstop.
Paul DeJong:
The Chicago White Sox are having one of their worst seasons in MLB history and All-Star shortstop Paul DeJong might like an opportunity to represent a team contending for the postseason.
While replacing Betts can be a tough gig for any player in the league, DeJong is enjoying a purple patch, registering seven home runs in his last 15 games, taking his tally to 14 for the season. DeJong can be a powerful addition to the middle order, with Shohei Ohtani likely to take up the lead-off position in Betts' absence.
