With only one week remaining before the regular season winds up, teams not in postseason contention have an aspiring offseason to look at. Part of offseason preparation means identifying potential needs of the team at different positions, whether in terms of depth or a regular playing member.

Today, we'll look at the top free agents available to play second base for the 2025 season.

3 best second baseman options in 2024-25 free agent class

3) Brandon Drury

The 32-year-old versatile infielder had a forgettable 2024 season, hitting only .167/.242/.230 in 339 plate appearances. That comes a year later, in 2023, where he hit .262/.306/.497 with the LA Angels in 2023.

The two-year deal with the Angels ends at the end of this season. The only good thing about his free agency is that he'll be available at a low cost, which means the risk associated with signing him would also be minimal.

With him also taking up different positions to play, Drury can be the option teams look at for a year or a minor league deal.

2) Gleyber Torres

The 28-year-old second baseman for the New York Yankees will turn free agent after this season. It has been a story of moments of high offensive numbers followed by a slump with Torres this season.

He didn't have a great April but followed it up with solid numbers in May and then again slumped in June, making his half-season numbers a lot to desire. However, since the All-Star break, he has looked far better, hitting .288 with 67 hits, seven home runs, 27 RBIs and 34 runs scored in 56 games.

His defensive attributes aren't that great but his offense, put together with his below-average age, could set him up for a multiyear contract this offseason.

1) Jose Iglesias

The 35-year-old veteran versatile infielder has hooked the viewers with his single "OMG" this season. His age doesn't make him much of a desired second baseman option but his numbers this season have been career-highs.

This season, he didn't start as a regular option for the New York Mets but with time, he has become one. He's currently the leadoff hitter for the team that is close to booking a Wild Card Spot. His career high .337/.381/.459 batting line in 265 plate appearances is what will entice teams to secure him on a two- or three-year deal.

Not to mention he can easily be moved around and can be used in outfield too. His glovework is great and if he can continue his uptick in offensive production this postseason, his value heading into free agency will increase multifold.
