The 2024 MLB season was full of surprises, but not all of them were good. For every Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, some players had shockingly bad seasons. For every Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees, there were teams like the Chicago White Sox. Not everything was good for everyone, and these five players and teams were the season's biggest disappointments.
Most disappointing players and teams from MLB 2024 season
5) Christopher Morel
By fWAR, Christopher Morel was the second-worst player in the MLB last year. He was worth -1.0. Bryan De La Cruz was worth -1.2. Morel, however, had been a solid player in his first two seasons, so this was shocking.
He had been worth a combined 3.3 fWAR in his first two seasons in the big leagues. The biggest culprit for his downfall was a collapse at the plate. He had a 110 and 121 wRC+ in the first two years before an astonishing 82 this season.
4) Toronto Blue Jays
The Toronto Blue Jays were a playoff team in 2023, and they had a young enough core that no one expected them to fall off as they did in 2024. They aggressively pursued Shohei Ohtani and missed out, but they were bad all around.
Players like Bo Bichette and virtually everyone not named Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had bad seasons, resulting in a stunning slip to last place in the AL East. They won just 74 games.
3) Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers are one of the most disappointing teams of 2024. They were the World Series champions in 2023, and they had some players eventually returning from injury and added a few key pieces in the offseason.
It all fell apart, though. They finished 78-84 in a down year for the AL West. They didn't have a single player exceed 4.5 fWAR, a total earned by Corey Seager. No starting pitcher had a better fWAR than Nathan Eovaldi's 2.7 fWAR, and that's not a recipe for a good team.
2) Alex Verdugo
The Yankees felt like they'd finally found their left fielder. Alex Verdugo was brought in to replace the revolving door of bad players on the left field. His defense was decent, but his offense was bad. He had an 83 wRC+, the ninth-worst among all qualified hitters.
The wRC+ and his 0.6 fWAR were career lows for a full season. It was ultimately a disastrous pairing in New York, and for good measure, Verdugo struck out (something he doesn't do as often as other MLB hitters) to end the World Series.
1) Maikel Garcia
If not for quality defense and baserunning, Maikel Garcia would have been one of the worst players in baseball. As it stands, he was the worst-qualified hitter in 2024. His 69 wRC+ means he was 31% worse than an average hitter.
The Kansas City Royals star's other offensive metrics aren't good, either. He hit .231 with a .613 OPS. His on-base percentage was below .300. Garcia had just a 6.7% walk rate. It was a bad year at the plate.
