The Los Angeles Angels were among the worst teams last year, and they're currently not set up to improve on that in 2025. They still don't have a roster full of talent, but there are some moves they can make to change that. Even at this stage, impactful free agents are available.
What the Angels need to do now
#5. Sign Kirby Yates
Kirby Yates hasn't dominated over the last few seasons but has been a fairly reliable relief pitcher. Every team can use that, and the Angels especially need someone who can pitch in some high-leverage situations.
Yates won't cost much and the Angels won't have a ton of competition for him right now. There are multiple free-agent relievers who may be better than Yates.
#4. Sign Teoscar Hernandez
It may not be in the best interest of the payroll to sign a player of Teoscar Hernandez's caliber. However, the Angels already have a high payroll and not very much talent to show for it. They should just lean in and get the best corner outfielder left.
Hernandez would play right field, allowing the Angels to move Jorge Soler to DH, where he is more suited to play. Hernandez would also likely give Mike Trout a strong running mate.
#3. Sign Jack Flaherty
Aside from Corbin Burnes, who is undoubtedly not coming to the Angels, Jack Flaherty is the best-starting pitcher left. He could be a good under-the-radar signing as he's just 29 and was pretty good all of last year.
Flaherty made a name for himself in the playoffs, and the Angels need pitching. Their rotation is full, but it's begging for an ace. If Flaherty could be the Los Angeles Dodgers' ace, he could do it for the other LA team.
#2. Sign Gleyber Torres
The Angels need some offensive firepower, and that is virtually all Gleyber Torres brings to the table. An overall down year last season will bring his price tag down into a more affordable range for the Angels, but he's still just 28 years old.
Torres could slot in at second base, allowing utility man Luis Rengifo to move around as needed. If Torres can't cut it on defense, then he would be a fine DH. The Angels can sign Torres to a multi-year deal and try to get him to recapture the form he had with the New York Yankees.
#1. Trade for Jordan Montgomery
The Angels wouldn't have to give up hardly anything for Jordan Montgomery. The Arizona Diamondbacks don't want him. While his $25 million price tag is questionable, Montgomery has been good every season except last.
The Angels can afford to take a flyer on reclaiming Montgomery. It will be a short-term, cheap investment if it doesn't work out. If it does, it fills a need they've had for several years in the starting rotation.
