The Toronto Blue Jays went from a playoff team to last place in the AL East in one season, which was not as dominant a division as it usually is. They took an alarming step back and it has impacted the general thinking about this team. To improve their future prospects, here are five moves the franchise should make:
5 offseason moves for the Blue Jays
#1) Sign Anthony Santander
Whether the Blue Jays rebuild or not, they could use a little bit of firepower in the short term. Anthony Santander, fresh off his 44-homer season with the Baltimore Orioles, has a little bit of firepower.
He's not the sort of free agent who's going to sign a five-year or longer deal, so the Jays can afford to spend a little on him for two or three seasons without jeopardizing the future they need to build so.
#2) Trade Chris Bassitt
Chris Bassitt has had a solid tenure with the Blue Jays, but he's entering the final year of his contract. Given how bad basically everyone was in Toronto, a rebuild or at least a retool is probably necessary.
Bassitt would be a good addition to most contenders, so the Jays would be able to get a good return which could be used to improve their future prospects. He's making $21 million this year, which is more than all but three players on the roster.
#3) Trade Bo Bichette
Bo Bichette had the worst year of his career last season. That means his value is at an all-time low, but it also means the Blue Jays probably need to think about life beyond him. Realistically, the former All-Star shortstop should be traded with the Blue Jays looking to the future.
It was always going to be a tall task to re-sign or extend both Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who debuted at similar times. The 2024 season made the choice clear, and Bichette could be somewhere else soon.
#4) Extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the only player who played to his capability in 2024. He had the second-best year of his career and was arguably the best first baseman in baseball. The Blue Jays knew they'd come upon the day when an extension was necessary. That day has come.
Guerrero Jr.'s contract ends after the 2026 season, but the Blue Jays ought to get ahead of it now. They should follow the recent trend of teams signing their best players well in advance of free agency and lock Guerrero down for at least the next decade.
#5) Sign Ha-Seong Kim
Whether or not the Blue Jays do trade Bo Bichette (especially if they do), they should sign Ha-Seong Kim. If Bichette is gone, then Kim can play shortstop. If not, he can play second or third base, so there's a ton of versatility.
Kim is capable with the bat even if he's not at the level of Bichette's offensive peak. He might be a little more consistent, though, so the Jays should look into signing the former San Diego Padres star.
