The Seattle Mariners made a push for the playoffs that landed just short last year. They have one of the most dominant pitching staffs in baseball one through five, but their offense was lackluster. Here are the moves they need to make in order to return to the postseason.
What the Mariners must do now
5) Sign Pete Alonso
Luke Raley was good for the Mariners at first base last year, but they badly need offense. Pete Alonso provides that without much defense, so they can either split time in the field or Alonso can be the full-time DH.
With a limited market for Alonso now, the Mariners might be able to swoop in and get him for a little less than they otherwise would have. Either way, his bat is a necessary addition at this stage of the offseason.
4) Trade Luis Castillo
The Mariners have an incredible surplus of starting pitching, and Luis Castillo is the most expendable. He's still very good, but he's getting older and more costly. He'd be a fantastic addition to a contender with a weaker pitching staff.
The crux here is that the Mariners must get a good offensive player in return. This shouldn't be a prospect haul, but rather someone who can infuse some firepower into their offense.
3) Sign Anthony Santander
The Mariners have to get some firepower. They also happen to have Victor Robles in right field, whom Santander would be an upgrade over. Santander would be a stellar addition in the middle of the lineup.
He could bat in order with Randy Arozarena and Julio Rodriguez to give the team a fearsome top-of-the-order. His defense is lacking, so he might be better off as a DH, but the bat is worth the investment.
2) Sign Gleyber Torres
Gleyber Torres is a must-add at this point. The Mariners desperately need offense, and that's what he provides. He would make an upgrade over Dylan Moore despite his lackluster defense and he can provide a bat at the top or in the middle of their lineup.
He's 28, so he's in line for a multi-year deal. Given that 2024 was a bit of a down year for him, the Mariners can probably sign him to a three-year contract with a lower AAV to keep some financial flexibility.
1) Sign Alex Bregman
Third base is another position that could stand to be upgraded. Moving on from Eugenio Suarez proved to be a bit of a misfire, and they need someone who can hit well and play good defense. That's Alex Bregman.
Like Torres, he had a down year last year. Also like Torres, the former Houston Astros star can bat at the top or in the middle of the lineup. The Mariners would also be stealing their rival the Houston Astros' star player, which is an added bonus.
