The Minnesota Twins looked poised for big things after their division crown in 2023. Then, they backslid while virtually the entire division made the playoffs. The Twins and historically bad Chicago White Sox were the only two teams not to make it out of the AL Central, so they have some work to do this offseason.
What the Twins must do next
5) Sign Pete Alonso
Carlos Santana is gone to Cleveland and while Jose Miranda was serviceable at first base, he was roughly as good overall as Pete Alonso but with worse offense. Alonso's price is likely dwindling with every passing day due to a limited market of teams that need a first baseman.
The Twins can strike at the right time and get a long-term deal with a lower AAV for Alonso. This would give them a good player and a dependable bat in the lineup as well as another star for fans to associate the team with.
4) Sign Anthony Santander
Anthony Santander would be a good fit for Minnesota. He would provide excellent offense from both sides of the plate and could play right field, the least locked-down outfield spot in Minnesota.
Santander is presumably going to cost a bit, but if the Twins are serious about getting back into contention in their division, they need to make a move to bring in some firepower.
3) Trade Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa was a big addition for them, but the rumors of a trade have already begun just a couple of years into his deal. This move wouldn't be popular, but it might be necessary.
With how good the rest of the division has gotten, a retool is in order. That begins with collecting assets from trades, and Correa is the best asset they have. He's also their most expensive player by almost double, so the money they save could be spread around better.
2) Sign David Robertson
Every team needs more relievers, and the Twins could use some for high-leverage spots. That is David Robertson's specialty and he's been solid over the last two seasons.
He is 39, so this might be his final stop, but Minnesota could use him. He recorded 3.1 fWAR over the last two seasons and he'd be a nice addition behind Jhoan Duran at the back of the Twins' pen.
1) Trade Christian Vazquez
Christian Vazquez will be a free agent after the end of 2025. He's also second on the depth chart at catcher behind Ryan Jeffers, which makes him a little bit expendable. With a $10 million price tag, it's easy to see why the team might want to move on.
This would hurt the team's depth, but so many other teams would presumably be interested in a veteran catcher for depth. This wouldn't be a blockbuster trade, but it's one the Twins ought to consider to continue retooling.
