MLB games can be thrilling sometimes. While most of the time, the competition is evenly matched between the hitter and the pitcher, sometimes the former subdues the latter. MLB history is filled with many games where teams score in abundance.

Like the time when the Philadelphia-Chicago NL games were played in 1922 and 1979, hitters breached levels unseen, with the scores of the respective games being 26-23 and 23-22.

However, let's take a look at the highest-scoring MLB games since 1900, given that not all the scores from the games prior to that were recorded properly.

#5 Robins vs. Phillies, 36 runs

In May 1929, when the Brooklyn Robins locked horns with the Philadelphia Phillies, there were no expectations of such a big score given that both teams were below .500 at the time. However, the hitters had their day as the Robins prevailed over the Phillies 20-16.

#4 Marlins vs. Braves, 38 runs

While most of the games on this list are from the 1900s, the 2020 MLB season had a game that breached the 38-run mark for the first time in this current century. The Atlanta Braves dominated the Miami Marlins, winning the game 29-9.

Marlins' Jordan Yamamoto gave up 13 runs in just 2.2 innings.

#3 Giants vs. Reds, 38 runs

This is the oldest game on this list and it came at a time when it wasn't easy to hit. The 1901 season had a league-wide OPS of .686 and 0.21 homers per game. However, the game between the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds stood out.

The Giants went up by 10-0 in a hurry, but the Reds came back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. However, the Giants continued to score at a high level, eventually winning the game 25-13.

#2 Phillies vs. Cubs, 45 runs

While most games on this list are one-sided, this one's not. The May 1929 game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs goes into the history books as both teams scored 20 or more runs.

The Cubs rallied three runs in the bottom of the eighth, forcing extra innings, but Mike Schmidt's home run off Bruce Sutter in the 10th helped the Phillies win the game 23-22.

#1 Phillies vs. Cubs, 49 runs

Another well-fought game by both sides came in 1922, when the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs scored 20 runs each in their respective innings.

For most of the game, the Cubs were leading. However, the Phillies surged, scoring 14 runs in the last two innings. Despite that, it wasn't enough, as the Cubs prevailed 26-23.
