Like every sport across the globe, MLB has it's fair share of rivalries. While some rivalries date back decades such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, some of the feuds have ties much closer to the modern day. This is something that the league has been trying to capitalize on by introducing "Rivalries Weekend" as part of the regular season schedule.
From in-state battles that have stood the test of time to playoff run-ins that have fueled the fire, there are a number of MLB rivalries that just add an extra layer of excitement to the action.
Here's a closer look at 5 MLB rivalries that were alive and well in 2024
#1 - Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees
As two of the most iconic MLB clubs across the globe, there was no love lost between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees in 2024. The two powerhouse franchises battled their way through the rest of the league, setting up a World Series showdown for the ages.
While the players were general cordial, the same could not be said about the fans. One of the biggest storylines came during the World Series when two Yankees fans tried to rip the ball out of Mookie Betts' glove during a foul play. It's safe to say that the two massive clubs and their fans may not soon forget the incident.
#2 - Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres
The reigning World Series champion Dodgers and the San Diego Padres might be one of the hottest MLB rivalries in the game right now. All season long, the two teams were aware that in order to win the title, they would likely have to face one another, something that poured into the crowd. Multiple Padres players such a Jurickson Profar had run-ins with Dodgers fans with some fans throwing objects onto the field.
#3 - New York Mets and New York Yankees
The Subway Series between the New York Mets and New York Yankees was alive and well in 2024. There has been a battle for MLB dominance for years between the Yankees and Mets, with fans even taking it into their own hands this season. Things reached an all-time high when Mets and Yankees fans decided to let their fists do the talking, leading to a brawl in the crowd between the rival fanbases.
#4 - Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets
The Milwaukee Brewers found themselves in the middle of a few dust-ups this season, however, the NL Central winners wasted little time in getting re-acquainted with the New York Mets. In the opening game of the season Jeff McNeil's frustration with Rhys Hoskins boiled over after a sliding play at 2nd base, leading to an argument and the benches clearing.
This was not the only time that the teams went at one another. During the postseason, Willy Adames and Mets outfielder Jesse Winker were seen going at one another, with Adames saying later that he would meet him outside in the parking lot. They may not be geographically close but the Brew Crew and Mets might not be the biggest fans of one another.
#5 - Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers
Although the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers might not be a traditional MLB rivalry, the two teams may have sparked something that could develop into an inter-division showdown. The Rays and Brewers were the only two MLB teams this past season to have player suspended multiple games for fighting. Jose Siri, Freddy Peralta, and Abner Uribe all recieved punishment for their involvement in the brawl.
