The MLB trade deadline is July 30, and it will be the last opportunity for teams to steer their ship before it gets too late. Franchises that are not expected to make the postseason generally trade off their star players to bolster their farm system and the future. On the other hand, clubs with World Series aspirations bring in reinforcements to bolster their roster.
This season, the Philadelphia Phillies (62-33) have been the best team in all of baseball, while the Chicago White Sox (27-70) possess the worst record in the entire league. Then there are the LA Dodgers and the New York Yankees, who are always strong contenders to lift the World Series title.
Let's take a look at which teams are expected to be the most active ahead of the trade deadline.
#5 Seattle Mariners
Following the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers' worrisome start to the MLB season, there was a good chance for the Seattle Mariners to run away with the division. Instead, what was once a healthy lead of 10.0 games has now shrunk to 1.0 as the Astros' ascension looks unstoppable at the moment.
The Mariners, who have been conservative in terms of payroll, could use this trade deadline to add more at-bats and finally enter the postseason leading the division. Their pitching and bullpen have been great, but the offense has looked blemished for starters.
#4 Chicago White Sox
There is no doubt MLB's worst team to be sure-sellers come this trade deadline. The Chicago White Sox are a blessing in disguise, but they have players that could lure top farm systems like the Yankees and the Dodgers to engage and trade with them.
Garrett Crochet is already reported to be the best asset for teams looking for a starter, while Luis Robert Jr. and Tommy Pham could also be the ones who get to play for different franchises after the trade deadline. White Sox general manager Chris Getz will have his hands full till the deadline hits.
#3 Miami Marlins
Another seller is the Miami Marlins, who have already indicated after shipping off Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres. The Marlins are on fire and would be open to calls from just about anyone from the MLB.
Center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. should be the top attraction. Moreover, it would be surprising if impending free agents like Tanner Scott and Josh Bell were not already traded by the deadline.
#2 New York Yankees
The New York Yankees may only have the combo of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge for a year if the former doesn't sign an extension to stay in the Bronx. This should motivate Yankees general manager Brian Cashman enough to work out their bullpen struggles and bring in reinforcements for this year's MLB season.
Miami Marlins' Tanner Scott and Oakland Athletics' Mason Miller remain their top priorities, while a sneak-in for Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz should not be surprising. Moreover, a blockbuster deal at first base remains a possibility, with big names like Pete Alonso and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. available in the trade market.
#1 Los Angeles Dodgers
Well, this shouldn't surprise many, as the organization that splurged billions in the offseason is still not the best team in the MLB, let alone in the National League. Bob Nightengale of USA Today confirmed this, reporting that the NL West leaders are not done wandering for better options.
There are concerns about their starting rotation, and such was their plight that they instantly asked for Garrett Crochet in trade, which was rejected by the White Sox. However, it's no secret that the Dodgers are still on the negotiating table, and both teams have a good chance to shake hands over a trade involving Crochet.
