While some MLB teams used the trade deadline to the fullest, others that are not likely to make the postseason still boast of stars who are performing well, but the same cannot be said about their teams.
Some stars like Garrett Crochet and Blake Snell will be pitching in the second half, knowing their respective teams won't be there in October. Let's take a look at five such stars:
#5. Cody Bellinger, Chicago Cubs (55-60)
Former NL MVP Cody Bellinger returned to the Cubs on a three-year, $80 million contract. Cubs have also signed Craig Counsell as manager to a lucrative contract, but the team hasn't been able to live up to expectations, struggling at the bottom of NL Central with a less than .500 record.
Bellinger is hitting .274 to go along with 11 home runs, five stolen bases and 43 RBIs in 86 games played. Some teams, like the New York Yankees and the Mets, were interested in his services at the trade deadline, but the Cubs didn't trade him.
#4. Tarik Skubal, Detroit Tigers (53-60)
Tarik Skubal has been one of the best pitchers in the AL. However, he's on a team that is second worst in the AL, sweeping the floors with divisional rivals, the Chicago White Sox.
Skubal, one of the AL Cy Young contenders this season, has gone 12-4, posting a 2.57 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 162 strikeouts. Moreover, his name was highly tied with teams like the Baltimore Orioles and the LA Dodgers. However, the Tigers didn't want to trade their 27-year-old just yet.
#3. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Toronto Blue Jays (51-61)
The Blue Jays are part of a tough division, with the top three teams, the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, all well positioned to claim a spot in the postseason. Currently, the Blue Jays are 11.0 games behind a wild card spot, which means they are likely not going to make the postseason.
For his part, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been doing all he can at the plate, hitting .316 to go along with 22 homers, two stolen bases and 72 RBIs.
#2. Garrett Crochet, Chicago White Sox (27-88)
The White Sox haven't won a game since the All-Star break. That isn't surprising given they haven't been anywhere near as good throughout the season and are the worst team in majors. The same cannot be said about Garrett Crochet, though.
Crochet has thrown his name in among the AL Cy Young contenders after posting an ERA of 3.19 and 162 strikeouts in 23 games started, where he has gone 6-8.
#1. Blake Snell, San Francisco Giants (57-57)
The Giants are in a challenging division and league where there are many contenders for the wild card spot. Currently, they are 4.5 games behind claiming a wild card spot, and if their last 10 games are concerned, they have gone 8-2, meaning there's a chance Blake Snell may get to pitch in the postseason.
Snell, who pitched his first no-hitter of his career against the Reds, is the 2023 NL Cy Young winner. This season, he initially started rough, but since coming back from injured list on July 9, there has been no one better on the mound than him.
In his last five starts, he has posted a 0.55 ERA and 41 strikeouts.
