The MLB regular season is a month away before it winds up ahead of one of the most competitive postseasons in a while. None of the teams, both in the AL and the NL are on pace to reach 100 wins, something not seen since the 2014 season.

It seems the late postseason momentum of lower-ranked teams overwhelming top teams has continued this season. Last year, the Braves finished as the top team in baseball with 104 wins.

On that note, let's take a look at the top five teams in MLB after Thursday's games:

#5 Orioles (77 wins)

The Baltimore Orioles are second in the AL East with a 77-58 record. They are 1.5 games behind leaders New York Yankees. Moreover, they are 4.0 games ahead while being in first place among three Wild Card spots.

For most of the season, the Orioles were the best team in the American League. However, a skid post the MLB All-Star break and a surge from the Yankees have kept them in second place in the AL.

The Orioles have one of MLB's youngest squads, with many of their players who are still on rookie contracts performing exceptionally. Gunnar Henderson, Colten Cowser and Adley Rutschman have contributed heavily on offense, while Corbin Burnes has led their pitching.

Although they are inexperienced, it remains to be seen how this young team fares in October. Oddsmakers have given them the fourth-best odds (+800) to win the World Series.

#4 Brewers (77 wins)

The Milwaukee Brewers have been one of the few surprise MLB teams this season.

Despite losing their longtime manager Craig Counsell in the offseason to the Chicago Cubs, new manager Pat Murphy has done well to take the team to a 77-56 record.

The team is postseason-bound, leading the Cubs by 9.5 games in the division. The Brewers have a balanced roster, something that should help them in the postseason.

Although oddsmakers (+1300 for a World Series win) don't see the team making waves in the postseason, they remain a dark horse.

#3 Yankees (78 wins)

The Yankees had Juan Soto for a year, assuming he chooses not to return next season on a blockbuster extension and test free agency. And boy have they made it count so far!

The Yankees, at 78-56, are the best team in the AL, and two names deserve the most credit for that: Juan Soto and Aaron Judge. It won't be an understatement to say that the 1-2 punch of the Yankees has been sensational in August, literally cruising them over a potential challenge from the second-placed Orioles.

They carry the best odds among all AL teams to reach and win the World Series (+500). Let's see if they can match the expectations in the postseason.

#2 Phillies (79 wins)

For most of the season, the Philadelphia Phillies were the best team in majors. However, after the midsummer break, they hit a snag, losing steam to the NL West leaders Los Angeles Dodgers.

However, since mid-August, they have returned to winning ways. They are first in the NL East with a 79-55 record, 6.0 games ahead of the second-placed Atlanta Braves.

The team is one of the most balanced ones in the National League, with stars like Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola leading from the front.

#1 Dodgers (80 wins)

After winning Thursday's game 6-3 against the Baltimore Orioles, the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first team to win 80 games this season. Their record stands at 80-54 in 2024, an edge of 4.0 and 5.0 games respectivelhy over fierce rivals Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Paders.

The Dodgers, being the best team in majors, were set up for success during the offseason. Signing big names like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and Teoscar Hernandez and pairing them with veteran All-Stars like Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Clayton Kershaw was the perfect recipe.

As expected, they have the best odds (+350) to win the World Series this year.
