Andrew James Russell hails from Franklin, Tennessee and has established himself as an important member of the Tennessee Volunteers baseball team. Presently, a sophomore pitcher, he is notable for throwing a low fastball and a slider that often causes his opponents to swing and miss. He secured 47 strikeouts in 30.1 innings in 24 games for his team as a freshman in 2023.

As a freshman, Russell earned several accolades for his performances. These include 2023 NCBWA Freshman All-American - 1st Team honors. Prior to him starting his college baseball career, he was regarded as the 14th overall player from Tennessee as well as a national Top 500 prospect by Perfect Game.

AJ Rusell was impressive in his freshman debut as he pitched two scoreless innings and stroke out three opponent batters while allowing just one hit against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. Notably, he displayed such strong performances throughout the season.

After the end of his freshman season, he was honored as the NCBWA Freshman All-American - 1st Team member, NCBWA All-American- 3rd Team member, Baseball America Freshman All-American - 2nd Team member and D1Baseball.com Freshman All-American 2nd Team member. For the 2022/23 season, he also earned SEC First Year Academic Honor Roll.

AJ Russell is further proving his talents in his second year of college baseball. His baseball skills led him to be included as a member of the NCBWA Preseason All-American - 2nd Team member in 2024. He also secured 10 strikeouts in his 2024 season debut against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

AJ Russell attended Franklin High School in Franklin, Tennessee, United States, where he played varsity baseball for his high school team, the Franklin Admirals. Russell was most successful in his junior and senior seasons during his varsity baseball career. As a junior in 2021, he secured 67 strikeouts in 44.1 innings and had a win-loss record of 3-0. He also guided his team to the playoffs of the Class 3A State Tournament. As a result, he was selected into the Main Street Preps All-Midstate Team in 2021. He also received Perfect Game Preseason All-American honors and was added to the Southeast All-Region Team in 2021.

Russell was even better as a pitcher during his senior 2022 season where he secured 94 strikeouts in 49.1 innings with a win-loss record of 6-1. As a result, he was added to the Tennessean Large Class All-Midstate Team in 2022. He once again received Perfect Game Preseason All-American honors and was added to the Southeast All-Region Team in 2022. Throughout his varsity baseball career, AJ Russell had an ERA of 0.90, and a win-loss record of 9-1. He also pitched 93.2 innings in his career.
